Big Surprise! Not. I mean, seriously, who would have ever guessed that one murderer would rat out the other? It was bound to happen eventually, people like that can never be trusted, even to their "partners." Dick's name actually has meaning now, because that was cold snitching on Perry like he did. He basically told the police that it was all Perry and Dick did none of the killing. Throughout the storyline, the dynamic duo are portrayed as besties, amigos, brothers for life. It is clear now that, for Dick, it was just an act and he just needed someone to frame. It's not like we really know that this was his plan all along, but it is definitely the best possibility.
From the beginning their relationship was a little strange. What else would you expect from two murderers who were just released from jail. They had strange nicknames like "Honey." I don't know about any of you, but I don't know any guys that are friends and call each other things like that. They would never live it down. True, there was no one else around that could listen to them, but still.
I mean, hey, maybe Dick just panicked and told the police whatever just to save himself. I know that if I ever went crazy and killed someone with my absolute best friend (hypothetical of course), I could never bring myself to blame it all on them. I would either never confess or say that we both did it. That's just cold.
When Perry finds out for sure that Dick has confessed, he follows suit, but admits he killed the family. It becomes clear now that the actual motive was robbery. Rumor had it that Mr. Clutter kept a lot of money in his safe. Clearly Perry and Dick were not the sharpest tools in the shed, who would commit a bigger crime to leave no witnesses to a smaller one? Their logic had clearly escaped them. Maybe if they had not committed the murder they would have never been caught. Just wore some masks, tie them up, steal the money, and get the hell out of there. I clearly no nothing about robbing anyone, so that is just a shot in the dark, but it definitely seems like the road more traveled.
